Pantry Makeover

Walmart – $5.00 each.
(I have small scoops inside the rice and protein powder that I keep in each container, for easy use!)
funny… when my kids first saw the pantry they asked if the containers are for decoration or if it’s okay to eat the food!
LOL.
They get it now… and love how “fun and easy” their snacks are to get to.
*Lose all those bulky BOXES!
Our family goes through a TON of cereal. And everyone likes totally different kinds.
So I didn’t want to waste my money on a bunch of different containers that I KNEW would always be half full, and have tons of cereal dust crumbs in the bottom of.
But I ALSO knew that I HATED all the cereal boxes that would pile up in our pantry… making it look cluttered and smaller then the space already was!
And again… Here’s the BIG PICTURE! ๐
For OUR family, this set up is working AWESOME!
I haven’t and ANY problems… and am really pleased at how well everything is working out ๐
I know that this doesn’t work well for ALL families, but that’s how we’ve ALWAYS done it…

BRILLIANT! love love love your pantry, all the detail, labels color all of it. My pantry is the same size.. so when can you come over and do mine? lol! I have the same black utencil dividers as well, my drawer looks just like yours… water spots and all. WELL DONE! I now want container's for all my snacks, cereals, and all! Jenn

WOW!!!! I love LOVE love it!! The vinyl gives it that extra kick that totally puts it over the edge! We just finished our pantry earlier this year and I think I need to paint the walls again and try this vinyl technique!
We put the old door that has a window in it back on so you can see into the pantry, so making it look cute inside would totally help!
Thanks for the inspiration and sorry for being so "wordy"….

OK – in response to "why does this still look like a mess" about under your kitchen sink…. check out this: neatheringourfest.blogspot.com/2010/06/closing-date-under-sink.html … I may not be very good at doing a before and after project, but I can organize like a pro. ๐ The pantry is BEAUTIFUL! I love it! Good job!!
the cape on the corner says
that's the most beautiful pantry i've ever seen. don't put it behind a door!
Unknown says
It looks AMAZING! I love everything about it…Will you do a post about how your new system is working in a few months? I have been tempted to switch to glass jars for storing a lot of my pantry items but am worried that it would get tedious to use, then refill, then to use them again…maybe I am just lazy?!
Anyway, LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
Amanda @ Serenity Now says
Oh my word!!! It is the most beautiful pantry I have EVER seen. ๐ I think I'm in love with your blog. ๐ Thanks so much for the visit yesterday! ๐
Katie says
Beautiful. I was about to say that I would never close the door to the pantry because of all the work you just did and for how beautiful it is. But then learned you do no have a door so that works out. ๐
Michelle Whitlow says
LOVE it!!! Our pantry has those annoying wire shelves that they put in all houses these days. So I can't put any cans or jars in it cause they're all wobbly. And I'm loving the gray color in there. Makes me want to redo my pantry!! I'm thinking I might try that color in my dining room ๐
The Nerdy Owl says
Wow – what a wonderful pantry! I love that you put the snacks in see through containers rather than in their own packages. It makes the entire space very clean and tidy looking.
Terra says
Come on over sister…I have a few areas that could use your help…ahem, just a few I swear~
What a fantastic post! I came over from Jens – glad I did.
Nichole says
WOW!! I am in love with your pantry. You dont even need a door with it looking THAT good!!! You could probably just sew/buy a single curtain panel and a suspension rod and hang a curtain. That way you can close it if you like. just a thought?
Anyways, super cute! great job!!
Kristen @ Hope Abound says
I'm in love with your pantry. You have definitely inspired me to get a hold on my own…can't wait to read more of your stuff.
Rhonda says
That is GORGEOUS! I love it Shelly! I love all the containers, vinyl, organization. Do your kids not sneak snacks or do you allow them to get it when they want? Mine would be all over those chocolate chips and even cereal. ๐
Andrea says
LOVE!!!!!!!!! Oh how I wish I had a pantry to make all cute and organized. Heck, I wish I had a pantry to leave a mess. Dang tiny kitchen. But I love this. And someday, I want to steal it and put it in my house. Lol. ๐

I LOVE it! Like, love-it-would-marry-it-if-it-would-have-me, love it! I used that exact same color gray in my bedroom above a creamy white board and batten treatment. It's a gorgeous color. So great!

Oh my gosh!!! This is AMAZING! I'm trying very hard right now to stay in the chair and not go in the kitchen and rip things out of the cupboards lol. You have done a fantastic job! Thanks so much for going through everything as well, I'm terrible at organizing and this gives me hope :).

Hi! Visiting from new friend fridays. My grandparents were Smiths. They're both gone now, but I still love and miss them daily!
BTW- love the pantry!

YOU ROCK!!! Wait….let me say that again, YOU ROCK!!! What a makeover for sure. It is absolutely beautiful. If you want an idea for your pots and and baking dishes amanda at kevinandamanda.com just posted about organizing that stuff. She has some great things I think you would love.
On a very different note I need to ask you a question. I know you don't do hair for anyone but do you know of someone who is good that I can go to? I usually get mine done in AZ by a friend but I'm not going anytime soon and I am dying with these roots. I have tried several different people here over the years and have been disappointed. Don't know if you could recommend anyone.
P.S. The offer is still on the table for a few pictures you want edited:)

Your pantry looks awasome, gives me inspiration for mine:).. For your spots on measuring cups try a product for your dishwasher called LemiShine. We get it at our local Wal-Mart, because our water here is so hard. Took care of the spots first time we used it.

Oh My! It's perfect!!! I love the whole look and your organization skills rock!! ๐

That looks absolutely amazing! I bet it is so much easier to use as well! We had to buy a stand alone cabinet to use as a pantry in this house and I had big plans for it but it is pretty deep so I struggle with it so much. All well… I'll just admire yours! lol

It is pretty safe to say that I have a crush on you…..I just adore what you did, so much of it looks like my pantry that I wonder if were were separated at birth…but then there are some great new ideas too. Just found you and will be back for more.
Kimmie @ Hello Mess says
Love this…obviously. But I am about to change your life. I'm not sure if UT Walmart carries it, but two weeks ago my neighbor introduced me to something called Lemi Shine. My dishes are AMAZING. Like, BRAND NEW looking after every wash in the dishwasher. I swear we have the worst water HERE too. Try it. You'll thank me. I promise. (And if you can't find it, let me know & I'll figure out how to send you some.)

And P.S.–I'm GLAD you didn't paint the underside of the shelves–shows you're HUMAN like the rest of us :0)
Oh, and P.P.S–I have a "snack drawer", which my kids have also never abused. They ask, they take, they put away. I get questioned about it all the time too!!

That is truly the most beautiful pantry I have ever seen! I am alternatingly jealous and inspired!
Nina @ Momma Go Round says
Um, is it wrong to be jealous of a pantry? I just wish I had one that wasn't the size of a shoe box, let alone such an amazing one! You rock!
The Yoder's Five says
Why would you want to hide that exquisite pantry with a door??? I totally love it!
shortmama says
It looks so good and gives me great ideas for my own pantry that Im going to redo soon! Except mine is the cabinet kind not all open and nice like yours.
Oh and we have hard water too…try using vinegar in your rinse instead of the jet dry. Works so much better for the spots!
ellie g says
I am at a loss for words. Look at that organization! I might need a brown paper bag for some deep breaths. If you find the vinyl missing from all your glass jars…I have NO idea where it went! (and don't come looking for it either….) I was feeling so sad to see the gray covered up…but if it's covered by awesomely labeled and cute containers, by all means, cover away!
(random note to self: Stop using a large size cinnamon bottle to mix Cinnamon Sugar. And then writing "sugar" on it with a sharpie!)
I don't think you need a door. For heaven's sakes…let all the world bask in your pantry. Heck, I might bring a sleeping bag and see if I can sleep in there!
I bet you feel so good about it. And you should. In fact, you should have a huge welt on your back from all the pats you're getting.
Awesome!!
Unknown says
I hate to say this, but I'm going to….This makes me sick! LOL! It looks better than the nicest room in my house! I can see this in a Better Homes and Garden magazine. Great job Shelley! By far, this is the most beautiful pantry I have ever seen!

Dead. I am dieing over your pantry. Who knew there was so much love in a pantry, Bravo friend, so worth it, and it looks like you put a lot of time into that baby. Oh, and we have the awful hard water here too, have you tried cascade complete dish detergent? It's the only kind I can get to work for me, it's a little more pricey, but so worth it!

I thought I was the only crazy one about stuff like this! For Mother's Day last year my husband asked what I wanted and I said I wanted all the organizing items for the pantry and the day to spend doing it. He thought I was trying to pull one over on him or something. I feel you sister!

Shelley, I have to say that I am in love with your pantry…I never thought I would say that about a pantry ๐ I have to say that you have an amazing ability to turn things from blah to beautiful & useful. Which I have to say is one amazing trick. Now I think you should take a little girl trip with your girls & come visit AZ, stay @ my house & help me become functional…because girl, I am a mess :{ We could totally plan it for when Kim has her baby…I might sound silly, But I am so not joking, he he. You are amazing!

Can I say that I just love you! I've been following your blog for a while now and am just absolutely inspired every time I look at it! This…I am definitely doing…if only just the organization part! I can't wait to get started! Hmmm Maybe I'll even start tonight! On a Friday night! What else do I have better to do with my weekend ๐ Anyways, my pantry is about the size of yours. Seriously! How do they expect anyone to fit in there to grab items, let alone paint! Sheesh! I have the same situation-no light. Which isn't always helpful. I've had in the back of my mind to get one of those little round, battery operated lights that you push to turn on, that you can just hang in the pantry. Maybe not a long term thing but for short term, may satisfy your light cravings!
idesign says
this is the most gorgeous pantry i've ever seen in my life! ๐

your pantry is amazing!! great job!
for hard water spots you have to try lemi-shine. it will change your life! well your dishes lives anyway. ๐ it's available at walmart by the dishwasher detergent and target too i think. about $4 and you only need a 1/2 to 1/3 of what they say you need. works amazingly well.

Okay, so I think I could move into your pantry and be completely content. It's gorgeous! I have a similar layout and style to my pantry but I just couldn't deal with having to move all the "ugly" stuff to other cupboards. No one in my house would cooperate with me on that one! So I'll just sit back and admire yours!

Just found your blog… I love your pantry, it is beautiful! However, I think the thing that gave me the biggest "A-ha!" moment was the basket with your kiddy bowls in them! What a brilliant idea. I REALLY dislike having the ugly, but much needed, plastic bowls with our other dishes. This is a great solution.

Beautiful! I recently did a post on my blog, too, about organizing the pantry. Little buggers were our motivation! Mine has stayed neat and tidy for over a month and a half now–a big ta-da for us! Mine was more nuts and bolts though–I love how you "prettied" yours up. I have one of those metal storage containers from Ikea too going unused…I may have to repurpose into the kitchen!
The Reluctant Belle says
You've totally inspired me to pretty my pantry!!! I'm all about the organization, but I've used my Tupperware up until now. Now I want it PRETTY like yours!

Love this and would love to know the depth of your shelves!
My pantry goes under the stair way and there is just deep plank shelves (kinda like linen closets) I have toyed with the idea of narrower shelves that create a "u" shape hoping to be much more orgnaized!

I love the pantry!!! Just found your blog…and have spent too much time looking at it and saying to myself…"Oh, cute…Oh, I want to do that…Oh, what if I did that…" LOL
I love to use old things and add them in…I love old doors and windows…soooooo
****When you are ready for any kind of door on the pantry…DON'T cover/close it up!!! It is so nice and airy…find an old wooden screen door with the pretty ornate middle and corners, ya know what I mean? Paint it up and hang it…you can still see all your hard work in the pantry but yet it kinda sets it all off…ohhhh I wish I could do that, I love old screen doors….my mind is racing, my husband is not gonna like that I have found your blog…heeheehee

I love this! It looks great! I definitely need to do some organization in my pantry, which is actually much much smaller than yours.
I love the look of the flour and sugar, etc in the glass containers. I've stored my flour and sugar in them and I really want to do my powdered sugar and grown sugar in them. I was just wondering if your brown sugar gets all dried out and hard in them? I can't find any glass containers with good seals on them (only plastic ones). What do you think?

Hi!
I love your pantry and blog:)
I just wanted to comment on the water spots on your measuring cups. If you're from Utah (I'm assuming you are cause you go to DI:) it's not the water. I've had the same trouble and tried EVERYTHING. I found a solution! Vinegar works on most things, but there were still spots. I just put some in with the detergent. The thing that works the best is called "Lemi Shine." It's sold near Jet Dri at Walmart. The instructions say to fill the main compartment up, but I just put a couple of tsp. in with the detergent in the main compartment.
Utah and other states outlawed phosphates in the detergent this past summer. Here's one article. Scroll to the middle.
blastmagazine.com/2010/12/18/earthtalk-what-is-desertification-why-does-dishwashing-detergent-suddenly-not-work-as-well/
If you aren't from Utah…sorry for this winded explanation, but the Lemi Shine should work no matter where you are:)

i'm curious if the containers you use will hold the entire contents of what you are putting inside, i.e. maple syrup bottle, snacks, etc. i love the idea of ditching the original containers, but hate it when only some will fit into my pretty container so then i still have to store the leftovers in the container it came in.

Blog-surfing looking around at pantry makeovers. I have to start from scratch, with an old coat closet so I want to plan, plan, plan! I am a big fan of wooden crates as well and am considering building some with casters for the floor of the pantry to keep overstock. I found great plans for them over at ana-white.com. Anyways, I featured your beautiful pantry today in a post about some of the most fabulous pantries in blogland! imperfecthomemaking.com/2011/10/organizedhome-day-5-fabulous-pantries.html

I recently re-did my pantry, too. I didn't paint the white walls, & kept the awful wire shelving (invented by a man, I'm sure). But I did get big clear containers & labeled EVERYTHING. Moved bulk items & seldom used things to a wood shelf (IKEA) that I put in my basement landing. Both area are so organized I sometimes just feel the need to admire my work!!

That is a beautiful pantry!
What is the spacing and dimensions of your shelving? Do you find it works well or you would like flexible shelving?
Lisa says
Love your pantry. I have a question thought. I basically have the same shaped pantry but I have wire shelving. I would LOVE to tear it all out and put in sturdy shelving like yours. Here's my question, what do you have supporting your shelves where they intersect? I know you have boarding running along the wall that they sit on but how is that piece under where the boards connect that runs out from the wall supporting them? I see that you have big, heavy, glass jars sitting right over that and I'm wondering 'how?'.

Very nice! I have exTREMEly limited pantry space in my house (2 level 3 bed townhouse). We bought a pantry cupboard from work (ikea, holla!) and have rearranged it a couple times. I've very limited space in my kitchen proper so everything gets rearranged every couple months as I toss things and recycle things.
Blair says
I'm doing this. Out of curiosity, how many sheets of quatrefoil did you need for your pantry?

I haven't checked through all the comments, and who knows if you've already lit up the space in your (beautiful and inspiring!) pantry, but I remembered a simple "sticky" circular light my grandmother has (more than one, actually). I think she has one that's primary colored and star-shaped, for children, but others are "grown-up", plain white plastic. They stick to the wall and you simply press the light to turn it on. Very helpful in dark corners. Just a suggestion, again if you haven't already wired a hanging light bulb in there!

Hello, I discovered your website when someone posted it on pinterest. I love your work!! I would really like to do this with our pantry….they look similar in size/dimiension. However, ours has this awful wire shelving. So I'd need to start with new shelves. My question is this- how are your shelves supported? I showed your pics to my hubby and he said there's no way they could support all those heavy items. And I said, "well, her shelves look great to me, so it MUST work!" Got any tips?

I ADORE the look you went for (and achieved!) in this pantry. It's fun, clean, organized, and beautiful! Well done! One questions though. How difficult was that vinyl to put up?
KeNaZy says
I do have one and I'm clueless on how to start and have easy access. Will pin yours to study and I'll come up with something as well. It's easier to come to yours and just dream that mine is like that…but then you open ur eyes and tadahhhhh…the reality is oh my…so …so…u know what I mean.
I'll get there…oh yes I will

I just found this through Pinterest, and I just have to say, I absolutely loved the look you achieved here. The quatrefoil was a brilliant move, and it made all the difference. Bravo for a job so very well done!!! ^.^

This is beautiful!! I am in LOVE with the quatrefoil pattern, I tried to visit your shop to check out prices, but it is down?! Anyhow, I'm the same way when it comes to treats, I always have a candy dish out, and therefore my kids dont abuse it, because its always been out, I totally understand how it is, because when other kids/parents visit, they are totally drawn to it! lol Keep up the great work!

GORGEOUS! I L.O.V.E. what you did, and definitely bookmarked your site for those vinyl designs ๐ You should get on Etsy if you aren't yet! Secondly, if you haven't yet built the doors for the pantry, you should think about putting some rods in and just hanging curtains with a fun fabric (something similar to a linen/soft burlap looking rough fabric would be a nice offset to the elegant design on the walls and would tie in the milk crates!) and then slide the curtains back to be held with little curved hooks on either side. It would really tie in the rest of the room and make that a focal point!
Anyway, I love what you did and I can't wait to do a similar project! Thanks for posting this ๐
Beauty for Scraps says
I love it! So much work but worth it! Don't know if you ever got to that door but you could do a curtain or a vinyl roll up shade. What I liked about the roll up is you could put a cute saying or design on it using vinyl- assuming you have a die-cutter ๐
If like me I'd keep it up most of the time and down when company came. lol

I've had some pantry ideas creeping around in my head a while. Our pantry is HUGE (like the size of a bathroom!)…like half of it is being used as a bar, with clutter hidden behind the door! lol…Maybe I should start making it pretty like yours!

Love, love, love your glass canisters with the glass lids. It doesn't look like they have gasket rubber rims to keep the flour/sugar/etc airtight. Do you ever have problems with the contents going bad? Would love to switch to this storage system if not. ๐

Looks great! You inspired me to clean up my pantry. Thank you for that. I have an easy fix for the cups and measuring spoons. You may have already seen/done it but, you can hang hooks in the inside of the cabinet doors. I can send a pic if you'd like. Thanks for the inspiration. You rock.

I LOVE your pantry. I have a love/hate thing going with mine. It never stays clean and organized. I am tired of redoing it. Mine looks like yours before the redo. Except my builder put in those wire shelves. I want them to go!! I think those corner pantries like yours and mine are hard to organize because it is hard to reach the things in the corners. I have a couple of lazy susan's in mine from IKEA as well for those hard to reach corners. I also wish IKEA still sold their glass canisters. Walmarts don't have the rubber seal.

Firstly, I dream of having a pantry like this it looks fantastic.
My only concern actually was the maple syrup, I'm not sure where you get your mapley goodness from but I know from experience keeping it in the pantry isn't the best idea. My boyfriend and I had local syrup in a big glass bottle and after a while we noticed mould growing in it D: it could be different if it's store-bought or "maple" syrup but we've kept ours in the fridge from now on.

I know this is an older post, but I just wanted to send in a suggestion. Your pantry is similar to mine. I bought a couple of Lazy Susans at Ikea and put them in the corners making it easier to access items that are sometimes hard to get at.

Your pantry is absolutely gorgeous ! Mine is the same shape just a little deeper. I wanted to know if that was wallpaper or vinyl transfers by the sheet. If vinyl transfers, weren't they a little expensive? I would think the sheets would run at least $20 each. Please let me know what you used.
Thank you!

LOVE THE LOOK!!!
I love your creativity, but my hand isn't steady enough for a stencil or a vinyl. I get too distracted and would get it all wonky.
I have not always been a fan of wallpaper, even though one of my grandfathers was a professional hanger. But, I think for this application, I would take out the shelves, and put that in instead. (Well, my husband would do it. hehe) That way the design would be straight and consistent, and the wallpaper would act as a barrier for any unexpected spill. You have kids, you get it. ๐
Thanks for your sharing your tips, tricks, and great personality!!

Love your pantry. One thing I loved was how you keep items you use on a regular basis in the pantry and have an overflow storage elsewhere (I assume you mean the garage. I have thought of that myself -2 cabinets on wheels one for what I buy in bulk due to the price and one for pots and pans, etc. I use once or twice a year. I need to free up space as my kitchen is so tiny.). Needless you have inspired me. One thing for sure, a built in pantry with deep shelves is not functional for me.
